2024 Presidential Election Coverage

Lead-Up Reporting

In the weeks leading up to Election Day, I helped students operate as a functioning newsroom. They pitched, scripted, filmed, and edited stories on political engagement, student concerns, and local issues. I guided them through story development and managed a production pipeline that modeled professional expectations.

Six student stories were published by NewsOne, and others appeared on HU News Service. Even those who didn’t publish gained meaningful newsroom experience with editorial deadlines and ethical decision-making under pressure.

Election Night on the Yard

On November 5, 2024, I led a credentialed student reporting team to cover Vice President Kamala Harris’ return to Howard University — the first time a sitting Vice President visited her alma mater on Election Night. Access to the Yard was restricted, and we were one of the only student reporting teams granted entry.

Students conducted live interviews, wrote scripts, edited video overnight, and filed publishable stories under deadline. I stayed with them in the newsroom until the early morning hours as they finalized their work. Stories were published in HU News Service and Essence.
